McDermott Speaks Up
Senator McDermottSmokers didn't cause the deficits of the State of Connecticut, but we're being forced to pay the bill for that. I've asked myself over and over and over again why are we doing this? The simple and only reason and answer is because we can. We can do it because there are not enough people to stand up and say no. Because people in here that understand the political correctness of society, realize that smokers should be somebody that's put off to the side and not paid attention to too much and they won't bicker, they won't complain, they'll just go ahead and go along with things. Well, there are approximately 600,000 smokers in the State of Connecticut that deserve to have at least a voice in this Chamber. It's not easy for me to stand up because I know this is not the most politically expedient thing for me to be doing, standing up here as a smoker, fighting for smokers' rights, but I'm going to do that. I'm going to say that they deserve to have that voice.” -Democrat Connecticut Senator Brian McDermott speaking to the bill to raise Connecticut’s cigarette tax -
